10 Indian Train Journeys you should take in your lifetime

May 21, 2015

It was a fine afternoon of April, 3.35PM to be precise. A train with 14 carriages and 400 guests was ready to left Bombay’s Bori Bunder for Thane on an hour and a half journey. The Year was 1853, and it was indeed the biggest day in the history of Indian Railways.

Fast Forwarding to 2015, Indian Railways, today generates a revenue of US$26 billion, carries 8.397 billion passengers annually and 1050.18 million tons of freight every year over a distance 115,000 km between 7, 172 stations.

The railway lines are distributed to the most remote corners of the country. Trains connecting to those places often present the most incredible train journeys presented with picturesque backgrounds, green foothills, deep gorges, long bridges, mystic rivers and, even, giant waterfalls.

I have curated a list of some of these trains.

1. Goa Express

From beaches of Goa to the urban life of Mumbai via the splendid Western Ghats, this journey has best of everything, a journey through thick jungle, through the curves of the highlands. Don’t jump front of seat if you encounter a waterfall splashing water to the windows.

The journey is less the 4 hours long and costs less than $5.

2. Dibrugarh Rajdhani Express

Get a chance to visit the easternmost side of India. One of the fastest train in India, starting from West Bengal, it reaches Assam in no time. But what’s worth noting is plush green tea plantations and paddy leafs on the way.

The moment, especially, when the train passes through the Brahmaputra river, the second longest river in Indian subcontinent, over a gigantic bridge is simply jaw dropping. The view of the river over the heights of the bridge is sure to leave you awestruck.

3. Nizamuddin Duronto Express

A train as vivid with the destinations it connects: Pune in West to Delhi in North. Quick, as Duronto means in Bengali, cutting otherwise 26 hours journey to mere 20 hours. The train cover several ecologies from rivers and foothills in Maharashtra to barren fields in Gujarat and desert in Rajasthan to small villages every then and now.

4. Mandovi Express

Another entry from Goa, except this time rather than south, it travels towards north through the magnificent Kokan Railway. With Sahyadri hills on the east and the Arabian Sea on the west, Konkan Railway truly provides the most stunning views among trains in India.

Not to mention, with 92 tunnels and 2,000 bridges, including the highest bridge in India, Konkan railways is full of excitement. Rest yourself through sunlit paddy fields surrounded by coconut and mango trees over the course of small villages overflowing with wild flowers: all those through the boundless bits of water leading out to sea.

Don’t be overexcited after a glimpse of marine life!
